What is the K-Index?

The planetary K-Index (Kp) measures geomagnetic activity on a 0-9 scale. Values of 5+ indicate geomagnetic storms that can produce visible aurora. WeatherAI tracks real-time Kp values from NOAA SWPC.

Can I get aurora alerts?

Not aurora sightings as such, but you can be told about what drives them. WeatherAI can notify you when NOAA observes a geomagnetic storm at or above the level you choose (G1, G2, or G3), and when a solar flare reaches the class you pick (M1, M5, or X1). Neither needs location access. The app does not predict whether the aurora will be visible where you are, since that depends on your latitude, darkness, and cloud cover, so treat a storm notification as the cue to go and look.
