San Jose has a warm Mediterranean climate sheltered by the Santa Cruz Mountains. At the San Jose station, the 1991-2020 reference averages range from a daily high of 59°F (15°C) in Dec to 83°F (28°C) in Aug. Monthly precipitation averages sum to 16.1 inches (410 mm) per year.
Winter is mild and delivers nearly all of the year's rain in bursts between dry spells. Spring warms quickly, with green hills fading to gold by May. Summers are dry, sunny, and noticeably warmer than San Francisco, the valley escapes most of the coastal fog, though marine air still cools the evenings. Fall stays warm and dry into October, which is also the peak of wildfire and smoke season in the surrounding hills.
