Phoenix has a hot desert climate with very hot summers and mild winters. At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the 1991-2020 reference averages range from a daily high of 66°F (19°C) in Dec to 107°F (41°C) in Jul. Monthly precipitation averages sum to 7.2 inches (183 mm) per year.
Summer heat is extreme from June through September, with overnight lows staying above 90°F during the worst stretches. The official monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30, though storm activity varies within that window. Thunderstorm outflows can raise dust storms, and heavy rain can cause flash flooding. Winters are generally mild.
Phoenix recorded 113 consecutive days with highs of 100°F or higher from May 27 through September 16, 2024. Urban pavement and buildings also release stored heat at night, limiting overnight cooling.
Local Planning Guide
June through September is the critical period for Phoenix, with dangerous heat early in summer and monsoon storms adding dust, lightning, and flood risk later.
Monsoon storms can be isolated and fast-changing, so radar, lightning context, and alerts help show which parts of the Valley are actually affected.
