Dallas has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. At Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, the 1991-2020 reference averages range from a daily high of 57°F (14°C) in Jan to 96°F (35°C) in Aug. Monthly precipitation averages sum to 37.0 inches (940 mm) per year.
Spring brings Tornado Alley's severe weather season; tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds are real threats from March through June. Summers are brutally hot with extended heat waves. Fall offers pleasant relief. Winter ice storms can shut down the city, as seen during Winter Storm Uri in 2021.
North Texas has experienced destructive tornadoes as well as large hail and damaging straight-line winds. A regional tornado average cannot tell you whether a particular storm will threaten your neighborhood; use current NWS warnings when storms approach.
Local Planning Guide
Dallas needs the most attention from March through June for severe storms, July-August for heat, and during occasional winter setups when freezing rain is possible.
Storms can intensify quickly across North Texas, so radar velocity, warning polygons, and saved-place alerts help distinguish routine thunder from storms that need action.
